In Loving Memory of Stephanie Sallee
MUNCIE, IN — A tragic discovery in a rural cornfield southwest of Muncie has left a community mourning the loss of 59-year-old Stephanie Sallee, whose body was found Friday afternoon, Aug. 14, after her vehicle became disabled during what investigators believe was a dangerous water-related incident.
According to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, Sallee’s vehicle was discovered in a cornfield west of the 4100 block of South Bell Creek Road. The vehicle was located approximately 80 to 100 feet west of the roadway, prompting authorities to search the surrounding area.
At approximately 2 p.m., investigators located Sallee’s body about 50 feet from her disabled vehicle. Delaware County Coroner Gavin Greene identified the woman as Stephanie Sallee of Muncie and confirmed that she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jeff Stanley, chief deputy of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, said preliminary information indicates that Sallee may have been attempting to travel through moving water that had covered the roadway. Investigators believe the powerful current swept her vehicle from the road and into the surrounding cornfield.
The circumstances underscore the dangers that can develop quickly when roads become covered by rapidly moving water. Even when a roadway appears passable, strong currents can make driving extremely hazardous and can cause vehicles to lose traction or be carried away from the road.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Sallee’s death and the events that led to her vehicle leaving the roadway. The investigation is expected to help establish the exact sequence of events, including the conditions of the roadway and the movement of floodwater at the time of the incident.
For those who knew Sallee, her death represents a heartbreaking and unexpected loss. The discovery of her body in the quiet rural area has brought sorrow to family, friends and others in the Muncie community as they come to terms with her passing.
Sallee was 59 years old and a resident of Muncie. While authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, those closest to her are left to remember her life and the memories she shared with the people who loved and cared for her.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Department and the Delaware County Coroner’s Office remain involved in the investigation. Officials have not indicated that foul play was involved, and the circumstances described so far point investigators toward a tragic incident involving moving water and the loss of control of the vehicle.
As the investigation continues, Stephanie Sallee’s family and loved ones are left to grieve a devastating loss. Her passing serves as a solemn reminder of how quickly hazardous roadway conditions can turn into tragedy.
In loving memory of Stephanie Sallee, 59, of Muncie, Indiana. May she be remembered with love, dignity and compassion, and may her family and friends find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
