Search Continues for Gunman After Fatal Shooting Kills Graduate Jamario Baker, 18
FAIRFIELD, Calif. — The search for the gunman who opened fire following a graduation ceremony in Fairfield continued Friday, two days after the shooting that claimed the life of 18-year-old graduate Jamario Baker.
Fairfield police have not released information about a suspect and are urging anyone with photos, videos, or surveillance footage from before, during, or after the shooting to come forward as investigators continue to search for answers.
A memorial continued to grow in the Fairfield High School parking lot, where friends, family members, and community members left flowers, candles, and handwritten messages in memory of Baker, who was shot and killed after gunfire erupted following Wednesday night’s Sem Yeto High School graduation ceremony.
Witnesses described a scene of confusion and fear as a celebration quickly turned into chaos. Nicholas Razo, who attended the graduation ceremony, recalled the uncertainty that followed the sound of gunfire.
“It was a little stressful. Everyone was all happy and stuff. It’s just a shame that everything happened,” Razo said.
He explained that although he was some distance away from the shooting, he did not know whether the violence would continue.
For Brittney Roberson, whose nephew graduated that evening, the tragedy hit especially close to home. Roberson said Baker was a friend of her nephew and described the frightening moments after the shooting began.
“I had to cover my daughter and duck and cover basically,” she said.
Despite the tragedy, graduation ceremonies continued across Fairfield. Fairfield High School held its commencement ceremony at Armijo High School after the location was changed following the shooting. The event included a moment of silence in honor of the Sem Yeto community and those affected by the tragedy.
The shooting has also raised questions about security at graduation events. Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District said an internal review found that an attempt had been made to request police support for the graduation ceremony. However, officials said the request was left on a voicemail line that was not checked daily and did not follow the department’s standard request process.
As the investigation continues, family members, friends, classmates, and the broader Fairfield community continue to mourn the loss of Jamario Baker while awaiting answers and justice.
