Man in Wheelchair Dies After Being Struck in Hit-and-Run Crash
INDIANAPOLIS — A pedestrian in a wheelchair died following a hit-and-run crash on the near south side of Indianapolis.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers were called Sunday around 10 p.m. to the intersection of East Raymond and Shelby streets for a report of a pedestrian-involved crash. When officers arrived, they found a man in a wheelchair who had suffered serious injuries.
The victim was transported to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified him as 50-year-old Earl Cecil Scruggs.
Police say the driver involved in the crash did not remain at the scene.
Investigators believe the pedestrian was in the median when he was struck. Witnesses told police that a white pickup truck hit the man and then fled westbound on Raymond Street immediately after the crash.
IMPD has launched an investigation and is working to identify the driver and locate the vehicle involved. Officers say the search is ongoing, and detectives are reviewing witness statements and any available surveillance footage from the area.
Authorities have not released further details about the suspect or possible charges at this time.
The crash adds to a series of serious incidents along Raymond Street in recent months, where officials have reported multiple severe injury and fatal crashes since March 2025.
The investigation remains active.
