In Loving Memory of Alexis Cummings

Alexis Cummings, 33, of Temple Hills, Maryland, is being remembered following her death after a serious multi-vehicle crash that occurred during a police pursuit in Prince George’s County.

Nearly a week after the August 25 incident, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown announced the identity of the woman who died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Cummings was one of two women who were inside the vehicle being pursued by deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

The heartbreaking incident unfolded during the morning hours of August 25, when two Charles County deputies pursued a vehicle that officials said was fleeing from authorities. The pursuit ultimately came to an end in Prince George’s County when the fleeing vehicle crashed into two uninvolved vehicles.

The collision left several people injured and prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the crash. Two women who were inside the fleeing vehicle were transported to a hospital for treatment. According to the Attorney General’s Office, one of the women was in grave condition. Another person who had been traveling in one of the uninvolved vehicles was also taken to the hospital with injuries.

Despite medical efforts, Cummings ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

Her identification was announced on August 31, bringing greater clarity to a tragedy that had left family, friends and the community waiting for answers. She was 33 years old.

The two Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputies involved in the pursuit were also identified by Attorney General Brown. They are PFC Eddie Vanover, a five-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, and Cpl. Justin Bottorf, a 13-year veteran.

The circumstances surrounding the pursuit, the events leading up to the crash, and the actions of those involved remain under investigation. The Independent Investigations Division (IID) is continuing its work to determine what happened and to establish the full sequence of events.

For those who knew and loved Alexis Cummings, however, the investigation is only one part of the story. Behind the official reports and unanswered questions was a 33-year-old woman whose life mattered to the people around her.
