In Loving Memory of Henry Herbert Greenwood

CLATSOP COUNTY, Ore. — With profound sadness, we remember Henry Herbert Greenwood, 77, of Portland, whose life came to a tragic end following a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 26 in Clatsop County on Friday evening, August 28, 2026.

According to the Oregon State Police, the collision occurred at approximately 5:18 p.m. near milepost 24. Greenwood was traveling eastbound in a gray Honda Fit when, for reasons that remain under investigation, his vehicle crossed into the westbound lane.

The Honda sideswiped a westbound black Tesla Model S driven by 56-year-old Tomislave Lakovic of Portland before continuing into a head-on collision with a westbound black Toyota Tacoma driven by 30-year-old Samantha Reanne Martindale of Molalla.

The chain of events continued as an eastbound black Volkswagen Golf, driven by 35-year-old Brandon J. Troost of Portland, attempted to avoid the Honda as it moved back toward the eastbound lane. The Volkswagen was subsequently struck from behind by an eastbound Ford F-350 pickup driven by 51-year-old Scott Michael Harrington of Hillsboro.

Greenwood was seriously injured in the crash and transported by Life Flight to a Portland-area hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was later pronounced deceased.

His passing leaves behind a life that was undoubtedly meaningful to family members, friends, neighbors and others who had the privilege of knowing him. At 77 years old, Greenwood had experienced decades of memories, relationships and moments that shaped the lives of those around him. His death is a heartbreaking reminder of how suddenly an ordinary journey can become a devastating loss.

A passenger traveling with Greenwood in the Honda was also flown to a Portland-area hospital with serious injuries.

Several others were affected by the collision. Martindale, the driver of the Toyota Tacoma, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, while four passengers in the Toyota were also taken for medical treatment. Their injuries reportedly ranged from minor to serious.

Lakovic, the Tesla driver, was not injured, and two passengers traveling with him also escaped injury. Troost and a passenger in the Volkswagen reported minor injuries but declined transportation to a hospital. Harrington was not injured.

The highway remained affected for approximately five hours as emergency responders worked to assist those involved, secure the area and conduct the initial investigation.

Oregon State Police was assisted at the scene by Medix Ambulance Service, Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District, Banks Fire District, Elsie Vinemaple Rural Fire Protection District and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, the focus now turns to remembering Henry Herbert Greenwood and honoring the life he lived.
