JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio — A Sunday evening crash in Smithfield Township has ended in tragedy, claiming the life of 29-year-old Corey Shetler of Dillonvale and leaving family, friends and the surrounding community mourning a life lost far too soon.

 

According to the Steubenville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 8:22 p.m. Sunday on County Road 10, about 0.2 miles west of State Route 152 in Jefferson County. Shetler was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision.

 

Despite the response of emergency crews, Shetler suffered injuries in the crash and was later confirmed deceased at approximately 9:38 p.m. His death has brought profound sadness to those who knew and loved him.

 

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the collision involved a Chevrolet Cavalier and a Chevrolet Silverado. Investigators determined that the Cavalier was traveling westbound on County Road 10 and was approaching a right-hand curve. At the same time, the Silverado was traveling eastbound.

 

According to the preliminary investigation, the Silverado failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. The pickup truck traveled off the right side of the roadway before the driver overcorrected. The vehicle then crossed the centerline and entered the opposite lane of travel.

 

Troopers said the right side of the Silverado struck the right-front portion of the Cavalier. Following the impact, the Silverado left the left side of the roadway, entered a ditch and eventually came to rest facing west. The Cavalier remained in the westbound lane, partially off the right edge of the roadway.

 

The patrol identified alcohol as a contributing factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue working to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the collision.

 

Multiple emergency and law-enforcement agencies responded to assist at the scene. Those agencies included the Smithfield Township Fire/EMS/Police Department, Wells Township Police Department, Brilliant Fire/EMS, Dillonvale Fire/EMS, Mt.
