TOWNVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA — The Anderson County community is mourning the loss of Abraham Canela Vasquez, a 17-year-old from Anderson, South Carolina, following a tragic drowning in Lake Hartwell.

According to the Anderson County Office of the Coroner, Vasquez was identified as the victim after emergency responders were called to 850 River Forks Road in Townville for a report of a person who had gone underwater and failed to resurface.

Preliminary information indicates that Vasquez had been swimming from one shoreline to another with a friend when he apparently became exhausted and went under the water. Despite an extensive search effort involving multiple emergency agencies, he was unable to resurface.

Two marine boats and multiple divers searched the area for more than an hour. The search continued both from the water and from the air as responders worked to locate the missing teenager.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Drone Unit ultimately located Vasquez from the air, helping authorities identify the area where the search needed to be concentrated. Responders then recovered the victim from the water.

The Anderson County Office of the Coroner later determined that the cause of death was freshwater drowning. The manner of death was ruled accidental.

Vasquez was a senior at Westside High School, making his death especially difficult for classmates, teachers, friends and members of the school community. At just 17 years old, his life and future were cut short in a heartbreaking accident.

Following the incident, numerous emergency agencies responded to the scene, including the Anderson County Office of the Coroner, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division, Dive Team, Drone Unit and Forensics Unit, Anderson County Fire Department, City of Anderson Fire Department, Anderson County Technical Rescue Team, Anderson County EMS, MedShore EMS and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

The Center Rock Fire Department Station 11, Medshore Ambulance Service, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson County EMS and Special Operations, and Anderson Technical Rescue Team were among the responders dispatched to assist with the search and recovery operation.

Authorities remained at the scene as the circumstances surrounding the drowning were investigated. The Anderson County Office of the Coroner, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources are handling the investigation.

While the preliminary investigation indicates that Vasquez became exhausted while swimming and went underwater, officials have ruled the death accidental. No indication of foul play has been reported in the information released by authorities.

The loss of a young person is particularly painful for a community, and Vasquez’s death has left those who knew him facing the difficult reality of saying goodbye to a teenager who should have had many more years ahead of him.

As family, friends, classmates and teachers remember Abraham, they are left with memories of a young man whose life ended far too soon. The recovery effort at Lake Hartwell involved a coordinated response from firefighters, law enforcement officers, divers, emergency medical personnel, technical rescue specialists, drone operators, the coroner’s office and state natural-resource officials. Their combined efforts continued until Vasquez was located and recovered.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning remains part of the official process, while the community begins the difficult work of grieving.
