In Loving Memory of Gerald Meyer

With profound sadness, we remember Gerald Meyer, 93, of Chicago, whose life came to an unexpected and tragic end following a serious traffic crash in Mount Prospect, Illinois, on August 18, 2026.

At approximately 10:05 a.m., Mount Prospect Police officers responded to the intersection of Northwest Highway (Route 14) and Mt. Prospect Road after receiving reports of a serious traffic collision involving two vehicles and an overturned SUV. The crash resulted in significant injuries and required emergency responders to work carefully at the scene to free those trapped inside one of the vehicles.

When officers arrived, they found a Ford SUV overturned on its roof in the intersection. A Toyota sedan was also involved in the collision. Gerald Meyer was a passenger in the Ford SUV and was among those trapped inside the vehicle.

Members of the fire department worked to extricate both Meyer and the driver of the Ford from the overturned SUV. Following the rescue operation, both were transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for medical treatment.

Despite the efforts of emergency responders and medical personnel, Meyer succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash. He later died at the hospital.

Gerald was 93 years old, but his life represented far more than the number of years he had lived. His passing leaves behind memories that will remain with the people who knew and loved him. Every life has a story, and every person leaves an imprint through the relationships, moments, kindness, and memories shared with others.

The driver of the Ford, a 75-year-old woman from Arlington Heights, was also transported for treatment. She sustained injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. The driver of the Toyota sedan, a 91-year-old woman from Mount Prospect, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Toyota sedan was traveling southbound on Mt. Prospect Road as it approached Northwest Highway. The Toyota entered the intersection and collided with the Ford SUV, which was traveling northwestbound on Northwest Highway.

The force of the collision caused the Ford SUV to overturn and come to rest on its roof. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation as authorities continue working to determine exactly what occurred in the moments leading up to the collision.

The Mount Prospect Police Department Major Crash Investigation Team is handling the investigation. The intersection remained closed while officers and emergency personnel investigated the scene, documented evidence, and worked to understand the sequence of events. The roadway was reopened at approximately 3:30 p.m.

As investigators continue their work, the loss of Gerald Meyer is being felt most deeply by those who knew him personally. A sudden tragedy such as this can leave families and friends facing a difficult mixture of grief, disbelief, and unanswered questions.

Gerald’s death is a reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can change. A journey through a familiar intersection became a heartbreaking event that ultimately claimed the life of a 93-year-old man.
