With profound sadness, we remember Fire Chaplain Hector Cruz, a dedicated volunteer chaplain with Polk County Fire Rescue whose life was tragically cut short on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, following a devastating traffic crash in Eagle Lake, Florida.

Chaplain Cruz was serving on duty when the crash occurred shortly before 11:33 a.m. at the intersection of West Eagle Avenue and U.S. Highway 17, also known as 4th Street North. He was 69 years old and was a resident of Winter Haven.

According to the preliminary investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit, Cruz was driving a 2026 Buick Enclave eastbound on West Eagle Avenue. He was stopped at the traffic signal at U.S. Highway 17 and proceeded into the intersection when the light turned green.

At the same time, investigators say a 2007 Sterling dump truck traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 17 entered the intersection. Multiple witnesses reportedly told investigators that the dump truck went through a red traffic signal before striking the Buick on the driver’s side.

The collision caused significant damage to the SUV and resulted in fatal injuries to Cruz. Emergency crews responded to the scene, but despite their efforts, he could not be saved.

The roadway remained closed for approximately three and a half hours as investigators worked to document the crash and determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.

But beyond the details of the crash is the story of a man whose life was dedicated to helping others.

Hector Cruz had served with Polk County Fire Rescue since 2023, providing support, compassion, and a steady presence to firefighters, first responders, families, and members of the community during some of life’s most difficult moments.

As a chaplain, his role extended far beyond words. He was there when firefighters faced emotionally challenging calls. He offered comfort during moments of grief, encouragement during difficult days, and a listening ear when someone simply needed someone to understand.

His presence made a difference.

Polk County Fire Rescue Fire Chief Shawn Smith spoke of Cruz’s impact on the department, describing him as someone who possessed a rare ability to make difficult situations easier for those around him.

“Chaplain Cruz’s influence was felt throughout the department as he had the ability to make a difficult situation easier,” Chief Smith said. “This ability is a rare one that not many can master but he was one of the few who did.”

Those words capture the kind of person Cruz was within his fire family. He was not simply a volunteer chaplain fulfilling a position. He was a source of strength and compassion for people who routinely encounter emergencies, loss, uncertainty, and heartbreak.

“Such sudden tragedy is never easy, but it is especially difficult when it is one of our own,” Chief Smith said. “My heart goes out to Hector’s family, friends and colleagues as they navigate this trying time.”
