In Loving Memory of Benny Roy Parker

It is with profound sadness that we remember Benny Roy Parker, 86, of Astoria, Oregon, who tragically lost his life in a fatal three-vehicle crash on Highway 30 in Clatsop County on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

Benny’s passing is a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends, loved ones, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. At 86 years old, he had lived through decades filled with experiences, relationships, memories, and moments that shaped the lives of those around him. His life was far more than the tragic circumstances that brought it to an end.

When a loved one is taken unexpectedly, there are often no words sufficient to express the pain that follows. A traffic crash can happen in a matter of seconds, but its consequences can remain with a family forever. For Benny’s loved ones, August 18 will now be remembered as the day they lost someone deeply important to them.

A Tragic Crash on Highway 30

According to the preliminary investigation, the Oregon State Police responded at approximately 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, to a serious two-vehicle crash on Highway 30 near milepost 80 in Clatsop County, approximately 16 miles east of Astoria.

Benny Roy Parker was driving a tan Chevrolet Malibu sedan eastbound on Highway 30. His vehicle was stopped while he waited to turn onto Valley Creek Lane.

A gray Ford F-350 pickup traveling eastbound, operated by 73-year-old Roger Dale McGilvey of Ocean Park, Washington, struck the rear of Parker’s Malibu.

The force of the collision pushed the Malibu into the westbound lane. There, it was struck by a silver Honda Accord traveling westbound and operated by 43-year-old Karl Edward Groenke of Ocean Park, Washington.

The collision was devastating.

Benny Parker was ejected from his vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

McGilvey and Groenke sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The highway remained impacted for approximately five hours while emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene and authorities conducted their investigation.

Remembering Benny Roy Parker

While the details of the crash are important to the ongoing investigation, Benny Parker’s life should never be defined solely by the circumstances of his death.

He was a person with a lifetime of memories.

At 86, Benny had experienced generations of change and countless chapters of life. He had people who knew him, people who cared about him, and people who will now have to learn how to move forward without his presence.

Every person leaves behind a story, and Benny’s story belongs to the people whose lives he touched.

For those closest to him, his memory will be found in photographs, conversations, family traditions, familiar places, and the countless moments that may have seemed ordinary at the time but now carry extraordinary meaning.

Those memories become especially important after a sudden loss.

The Pain of an Unexpected Goodbye

There is something particularly painful about losing someone without warning.

There is no opportunity to prepare for the final goodbye. One moment, a loved one is part of everyday life, and the next, family members are faced with the unimaginable reality that they are gone.

For Benny’s family and friends, the days ahead may bring waves of grief that come unexpectedly.

There may be moments of disbelief.

There may be tears.

There may be questions that cannot immediately be answered.

There may also be moments of laughter as loved ones remember something Benny said or did that brought happiness into their lives.

All of these emotions are part of grief.

The sadness felt after his passing is a reflection of the love and importance he carried during his lifetime.

A Lifetime of Memories

At 86 years old, Benny Parker had a lifetime of experiences behind him.

Every decade brought new memories. Every person he met became part of his journey in some way. Every family gathering, conversation, celebration, challenge, and quiet day contributed to the story of his life.

Those memories cannot be erased by his passing.

His loved ones can continue to tell stories about him. They can look at photographs and remember where they were and what was happening when those pictures were taken. They can continue traditions that remind them of him.

In this way, Benny’s presence can continue even though he is no longer physically with them.

A person’s life lives on through the people who remember them.

A Loss Felt by Many

The loss of an elderly loved one can be difficult to describe because it represents the loss of not only a person but also a connection to years of family history and shared experiences.

Benny’s passing leaves behind memories that span generations.

For those who knew him, his voice, personality, stories, and presence may have been familiar parts of life for many years.

Now, there is an absence where that presence once was.

That absence will be felt in quiet moments and during important occasions alike.

Birthdays may feel different.

Holidays may feel different.

Family gatherings may feel different.

Even ordinary days can bring reminders that someone important is missing.

Yet those moments can also become opportunities to celebrate Benny’s life and the memories he left behind.

The First Responders and Those Who Helped

Several agencies responded to the devastating crash and worked to assist those involved while preserving the scene for investigators.

The Oregon State Police were assisted by the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Knappa Fire Department, Astoria Fire Department, Medix Ambulance, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Their response reflects the coordinated effort required when a serious collision occurs.

Emergency personnel work under difficult circumstances to provide medical assistance, secure crash scenes, protect other motorists, and help investigators understand what happened.

The highway remained affected for approximately five hours as this work continued.

The Investigation

The crash remains subject to investigation by the Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU).

The CRU is a specialized team responsible for investigating fatal and critical-injury collisions on Oregon highways. Its work includes documenting and analyzing complex crashes and crime scenes.

According to Oregon State Police, members of the unit receive specialized training in advanced measuring techniques and the use of small unmanned aircraft systems for on-scene investigations. The team includes collision reconstructionists accredited through ACTAR as well as technical collision investigators deployed throughout Oregon.

The ongoing investigation is intended to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and provide a comprehensive understanding of what occurred.

More Than a Headline

When a fatal crash appears in the news, it can sometimes be easy to focus only on the vehicles, the roadway, the investigation, and the circumstances of the collision.

But behind every fatality is a person.

Behind Benny Parker’s name was a lifetime.

There were people who knew him.

There were memories that belonged to him.

There were moments that cannot be repeated.

And there are loved ones who now have to face a future without him.

That is why remembering Benny matters.

He should be remembered not only as the victim of a tragic Highway 30 crash, but as Benny Roy Parker, a man who lived 86 years and whose life had meaning to those around him.

Holding His Loved Ones Close

During a time of profound grief, family and friends often need patience, compassion, and understanding.

There is no timetable for mourning.

Some days may be filled with memories and stories. Other days may be much harder.

The healing process does not mean forgetting Benny. Instead, it means learning to carry his memory while continuing forward.

May his family find strength in one another.

May friends and loved ones surround them with compassion.

May the memories of Benny provide comfort during the most difficult moments.

And may they always remember that the love they shared with him does not end simply because his life has ended.

His Memory Will Live On

A person may leave this world, but the memories they create can remain for generations.

Benny Parker’s life will continue through the people who remember him.

His name can continue to be spoken.

His stories can continue to be shared.

His photographs can continue to bring back memories.

The lessons and experiences of his lifetime can continue to influence those who knew him.

In this way, a person’s legacy is not measured by the moment of their passing. It is measured by everything they leave behind in the hearts of others.
