According to the preliminary investigation, Peterkin was traveling on a motorized bicycle when, for reasons that remain under investigation, he and the bicycle came to rest in the roadway. Investigators said the bicycle and Peterkin were lying partially within the northbound lane of U.S. 51, with Peterkin facing south.
At the same time, a 2019 Nissan Sentra was traveling north along U.S. Highway 51. Police said the Nissan subsequently struck Peterkin while he was in the northbound lane.
The impact resulted in critical injuries to Peterkin. Despite the response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. His death has left loved ones and those who knew him facing the difficult reality of losing a member of their community in a sudden and tragic roadway incident.
Authorities reported that Peterkin was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the crash and was not wearing a helmet. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the events leading up to Peterkin and his motorized bicycle being in the roadway.
The driver of the Nissan Sentra was properly restrained during the crash and did not suffer injuries, according to Louisiana State Police.
As part of the ongoing investigation, a routine toxicology sample was obtained from the involved driver or drivers for analysis. The results may assist investigators as they work to establish a complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not indicated that all factors contributing to the crash have been determined.
