In Loving Memory: Curtis Vannier and Kelsey Barksdale
The Knox County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Curtis Vannier, 28, of Moline, and Kelsey Barksdale, 27, of Davenport, who lost their lives in a tragic wrong-way crash on Interstate 74 early Sunday morning.
According to the Knox County coroner, Curtis and Kelsey were the two people killed in the devastating collision. Illinois State Police said the crash happened at approximately 2:10 a.m. in Knoxville, when Brian Boyer was allegedly driving the wrong way on westbound I-74 and collided with a motorcycle.
The circumstances surrounding their deaths are painful and difficult to comprehend. In a matter of moments, two young lives were taken, leaving behind family members, friends, and loved ones who must now face an unimaginable loss.
At just 28 years old, Curtis Vannier had so much life ahead of him. At 27, Kelsey Barksdale was also taken far too soon. Their lives were more than the circumstances of their final moments. They were individuals with their own stories, memories, dreams, relationships, and people who cared deeply about them.
A tragedy like this leaves an emptiness that words cannot easily describe. Families may find themselves remembering the smallest details—the sound of a loved one’s voice, a familiar smile, shared jokes, conversations, celebrations, and ordinary moments that suddenly become priceless memories.
The crash has also led to criminal charges. Authorities said Boyer is facing two counts of felony reckless homicide and two counts of felony driving under the influence. The legal process will determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
For those who knew Curtis and Kelsey, however, no court proceeding can change the deepest reality: two lives have been lost, and two families are grieving.
During this difficult time, may their loved ones find strength in one another and comfort in the memories Curtis and Kelsey left behind. May their lives be remembered for the people they were, the moments they shared, and the impact they had on those fortunate enough to know them.
May the memories of Curtis and Kelsey continue to live on in the hearts of their families and friends.
May Curtis Vannier and Kelsey Barksdale rest in eternal peace.
Gone far too soon, but never forgotten.
