Gone Too Soon, Never Forgotten

With profound sadness, we remember Amanda Wertman, 41, of Winslow, Indiana, and her beloved 8-year-old daughter, whose lives were tragically taken following a fatal crash in Pike County.

The loss of a mother and her young daughter in the same heartbreaking incident is a tragedy that is difficult to put into words. Two lives that should have continued together were suddenly and unexpectedly taken, leaving behind family members, friends, loved ones, and an entire community to grieve.

According to the Indiana State Police, the crash occurred Saturday evening on State Road 64 during a vehicle pursuit. At approximately 7:42 p.m., a Pike County Sheriff’s Department deputy was responding to an active domestic violence call at the Country Junction gas station near State Road 64 and State Road 61.

During the incident, a red Toyota Camry believed to be connected to the domestic violence call left the gas station. Authorities reported that the vehicle forced another motorist off the roadway and continued eastbound on State Road 64. The deputy later observed the vehicle fail to stop at a flashing red signal at the intersection of State Road 61 and State Road 64.

As the deputy approached, investigators reported that the Camry crossed into the deputy’s lane and attempted to strike the patrol vehicle. The deputy avoided the collision and turned around, initiating a pursuit.

A short time later, near County Road 900 East, the Camry crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Toyota Sienna being driven by Amanda Wertman.

Amanda and the driver of the Camry were pronounced deceased at the scene. Four juveniles were traveling with Amanda in the Sienna. Her 8-year-old daughter was later pronounced deceased at a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital. Three other juveniles remained hospitalized and were expected to recover.

Remembering Amanda

Amanda Wertman was a mother whose life was forever connected to the children she loved. Her passing leaves behind an immeasurable void for those who knew her.

For her family and friends, Amanda will be remembered for far more than the tragic circumstances of her death. She was a daughter, a mother, a friend, and a loved one.
