The Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a tragic early-morning crash that claimed the life of 52-year-old Eric G. Carpenter of Howard, Ohio, after the utility task vehicle he was operating left the roadway and overturned in Jefferson Township, Knox County.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, troopers and deputies were called to the area of Harrisburg Road near Chapel Road at approximately 4:44 a.m. on August 25 after the Knox County 911 Dispatch Center received a report from a passing motorist who had discovered the crash.

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that Carpenter was operating a 2024 Polaris RZR southbound on Harrisburg Road when the UTV traveled off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a fence and subsequently overturned before coming to rest on its side in the roadway.

During the crash, Carpenter was ejected from the UTV. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Mount Gilead Post. Investigators are working to determine the events and factors that led to the UTV leaving the roadway and overturning.
