In Loving Memory of Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin

With profound sadness, we remember Shamima Begum, 46, and her daughter, Areebah Jahin, 23, whose lives were tragically cut short in a devastating crash on Interstate 270 in Bethesda, Maryland.

According to Maryland State Police, the mother and daughter were passengers in a Toyota sedan when a Ford Mustang traveling in the wrong direction on I-270 collided with their vehicle head-on. Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 6:46 p.m. Saturday, just south of Democracy Boulevard. Shamima and Areebah were pronounced dead following the collision.

Their deaths have left behind a family and community facing unimaginable grief. Losing a loved one suddenly is painful, but losing a mother and daughter in the same tragedy makes the heartbreak even harder to comprehend.

Shamima will be remembered as a mother whose life was undoubtedly filled with love, memories, and moments shared with those closest to her. Areebah, only 23, had so much life ahead of her, with dreams, hopes, and countless possibilities that will now remain unfulfilled.

Police identified the Mustang driver as 32-year-old Jose Nolasco, who was also hospitalized with injuries. A 62-year-old driver and an 8-year-old passenger in the Toyota were hospitalized as well. Investigators believe impairment may have contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.
